Howard Government Attacks Democracy
The big news out of the House on the Hill today has been a failed censure motion against PMJH for his comments against Obama, the bigger news should be the plans for the Government to silence debate in 'That Place'....Leader of the House Tony Abbott will today move a motion that will limit debates on matters of public importance (MPI) from two hours to one hour, Independent MP for New England Tony Windsor said.
The MPIs, generally held every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday on parliamentary sitting weeks, give members a chance to bring up any issue of concern.
Labor regularly uses the MPIs to criticise the Government over the issue of the day, while Mr Windsor said they were also a vital method for MPs to represent their constituencies. MPIs last week included water, climate change and education.
Mr Windsor said the Federal Government planned to use its numbers in the lower house to silence debate in an election year.
It's almost as if you couldn't tell it was an election year....
