Man Sentenced in Oil-for-Food Scandal

"NEW YORK, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tongsun Park, 71, a citizen of the Republic of Korea, was sentenced today to 60 months in prison for his role in connection with corruption of the United Nations Oil-for-Food Program, U.S. Attorney Michael J. Garcia of the Southern District of New York announced. On July 13, 2006, Park was found guilty by a jury of conspiring to act in the United States as an unregistered agent of the government of Iraq, specifically to assist the former Iraqi government in the creation of the U.N. Oil-for-Food Program.

Park was sentenced to 60 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Park was also ordered to pay a fine of $15,000 and to forfeit $1.2 million to the United States. The funds forfeited in this case, as with other funds recovered in the investigation of corruption in the Oil- for-Food Program, are expected to be remitted to the Development Fund for Iraq."
