A nation is born?
Whilst I'd usually leave such a post to my Canadian colleagues, they are unable at the moment... It appears as though a new nation has been born my friends...CANADA'S House of Commons today overwhelmingly adopted a resolution stating that the Quebec province represents a "nation" within Canada in an unprecedented vote initiated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
"This house recognises that the Quebecois form a nation within a united Canada," stated the resolution, which passed by a vote of 266-16.
Obviously this is a nation within a nation, and really doesn't change much, I am not going to pretend to understand why the Quebecois wish to be their own nation, I understand it's cultural significance, I don't understand the whole French thing, but whatever... I guess if it increases your popularity...
I just hope I don't need to get another visa next time I visit...
The Canadian Liberal party is holding its leadership convention over the next week, Carla is attending the convention as I type, so I am sure we may hear something from her sometime...

Lets look at it from another angle. I was born in Quebec, and so was my father. My family and myself lived outside of Quebec most of my life. Now here is the question; Is my Canadian citizenship and voting rights as a Canadian at risk? and will I have to take out a visa to live in a country that I thought was mine? How many other people in this great nation will have to go through hell just because they were born in Quebec?
I can see this turning into a big problem for many that were born in Quebec if this gets out of control.
You raise an incredibly valid point Anonymous... On the upside, if you, as a birth citizen of Quebec, were to be assaulted or defamed, or politically ostracised within Quebec, could you seek asylum within Canada?
Although one advantage may be that if Quebec feels the desire, why not petition the UN for another seat?
If it weren't for Canada raising serious concerns against the Australian Wheat Board's behaviour in Iraq, we wouldn't know just how incompetent the Australian Government really is!
